What is a Spinal Decompression Table and How Can It Help?
Back pain is a very common problem, affecting tens of millions of people. It can be caused by many different things. Fortunately, you do not have to just live with it. A trip to the chiropractor and a few sessions on a spinal decompression table can get you back to loving life. At Sports Chiropractic Health in Palm Bay, we provide spinal decompression therapy.
What is Spinal Decompression?
Spinal decompression is a way of stretching the spine to adjust and align it when necessary. As the spine is stretched, it relieves pressure on the spinal discs and nerves. Your chiropractor will determine if it is the right treatment to address your back pain.
How Does a Spinal Decompression Table Work?
Nonsurgical spinal decompression can be achieved with a spinal decompression table. It is a computerized table that has parts that move independently. The patient lays on the table and a harness is strapped around the body. Once the patient is safely strapped in and positioned properly, the table is put to work.
Before the patient even gets on the table, the chiropractor takes a look at the patient’s medical history and overall health. The chiropractor will likely use X-rays, MRIs, or other visual tests, and assess the pain that the patient is experiencing. The chiropractor will determine whether or not the patient should receive decompression treatment using the table.
If the patient is a good candidate, the chiropractor will develop a treatment plan that involves the decompression table and then input specific instructions into the computerized system. The computer then manipulates the table parts to move in separate directions which will stretch the spine and muscles accordingly.
The amount of pull used on the patient depends on their individual needs as well as their overall size and condition. Typically, the chiropractor can choose anywhere from 5 pounds of pressure to 100 pounds of pressure. The decompression table has sensors that can point out any areas that are not receiving a full stretch. This lets the technician know where to focus more energy, ensuring that you get optimal treatment.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
There is no one size fits all approach to spinal decompression. Most people should expect at least a dozen 30-minute sessions to receive the full effect. However, for more serious pains and medical conditions, you might require more.
